Why Krill Makes Fish More Colourful (It’s the Same Reason Flamingos Are Pink)

Fish can’t make red. Neither can flamingos. The pigment behind both is astaxanthin, and the densest natural source your fish will ever meet is Whole Antarctic Krill.

A flamingo is born grey. Every ounce of that famous pink is imported, eaten, one brine shrimp and one algae cell at a time, then unpacked and installed in the feathers. Your fish work exactly the same way. That electric red on a male guppy, the sunset orange on a cichlid, the deep crimson on a discus: none of it is manufactured on site. It all arrives by mouth.

Fish can’t make red, full stop

The pigments behind red, orange and yellow are carotenoids, and animals simply don’t have the machinery to build them from scratch. Only plants, algae and some microbes do. A fish’s colour cells (chromatophores) are more like display cases: they can arrange, concentrate and show off pigment, but the pigment itself has to be delivered through the diet. No delivery, no show. This is why a spectacular fish at the store can slowly fade into a beige version of itself at home. The genetics didn’t change. The menu did.

Astaxanthin, the heavyweight

The king of these pigments is astaxanthin, the specific carotenoid that turns salmon flesh pink, lobsters red when cooked, and flamingos into flamingos. It starts life in microscopic algae. Krill eat those algae in staggering volumes and concentrate the pigment in their bodies, which makes krill one of the densest natural astaxanthin packages on the planet. It’s also a potent antioxidant, so it’s doing quiet cellular work well beyond the paint job.

Natural pigment vs. paint

Plenty of foods promise “colour enhancing,” and some deliver it the cheap way: synthetic additive pigments dosed high enough to force a fast result. That’s paint. It shows up quickly, it can overshoot into muddy artificial tones, and it does nothing for the fish’s health. Carotenoids fed through whole ingredients work slower, figure two to six weeks of steady feeding before colours visibly deepen, because the fish is genuinely metabolizing and depositing pigment, not just absorbing dye. The result reads different too: saturated but natural, the way the species is supposed to look.

How to feed for colour

Check the label’s first ingredients for the actual pigment source. Whole Antarctic Krill at the top of the list is the tell.
