Fish Food Ingredients to Avoid: A Field Guide to the Fine Print

Corn, soy, wheat, potato protein, wood pulp and dye: a tour of the ingredients that keep showing up in fish food despite having no business underwater, and how to spot a label worth trusting.

Nobody buys fish food for the paragraph on the back of the bag. But that little block of fine print is the only honest sentence in the whole package, and once you learn to read it, you cannot unread it. Here is a short field guide to the ingredients that should make you put a bag back on the shelf, and an explanation of how they got into the recipe in the first place. None of it requires a chemistry degree, just thirty seconds and a little healthy suspicion.

Corn, soy and wheat: the farm has no business underwater

No fish ever evolved in a cornfield. Aquatic food webs run on algae, invertebrates, insects and other fish; terrestrial farm crops simply do not occur in them. A fish’s digestive tract is short and geared for protein and fat, not for grain starch, so a big fraction of that starch passes through unused and gets to work on your water instead, feeding ammonia and algae. The bag empties, the fish stays full of filler, and the tank does the digesting.

So why is grain in the bag at all? Because it is cheap, and because starch makes pellets easy to manufacture. One honest nuance belongs here: a small amount of wheat flour used as a binder is normal and unavoidable, since pellets need to hold together in water. The problem is not a binder doing a binder’s job. The problem is corn, soy or wheat sitting in the first ingredient slots, where the marine protein should be. At that point you are not buying fish food with a binder. You are buying bread shaped like fish food.

Potato protein and other clever disguises

As shoppers learned to frown at corn, some recipes got a wardrobe change. Potato protein, pea protein and “vegetable protein concentrate” sound more refined, and they do push the protein number up. But they are the same idea wearing a nicer coat: a terrestrial farm crop standing in for the marine protein a fish’s body actually runs on. An amino acid profile built for potatoes is not the one an aquatic carnivore or omnivore evolved to use. The tell is in the fine print: plant-protein-heavy recipes often pair a respectable protein number with an ingredient list where no marine species appears until the middle.

Cellulose: a polite word for wood pulp

Somewhere down many ingredient lists sits “cellulose” or “powdered cellulose.” That is wood pulp, purified and milled. It is indigestible bulk whose job is to add weight and volume at almost no cost. A fish gains nothing from it; every gram of it in the bag is a gram of nutrition that is not there.

Artificial dyes: colour for the human

Bright red and green pellets are dyed for the person holding the bag, because a fish cannot install food colouring into its skin.
